Carpet Care FAQ

Keep your rugs looking fresh and lasting longer with these care tips.

How should I clean my carpet or rug at home?

For everyday upkeep, vacuum your rug at least once a week — always in the direction of the pile to avoid distorting the fibres. For spot cleaning, blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth; never rub, as this can spread the stain and damage the weave. Use a mild detergent diluted in cold water, apply gently, then rinse with a damp cloth and allow to air dry flat away from direct sunlight. For machine-washable bath mats, follow the care label and use a gentle cold-water cycle.

How do I remove stubborn stains from a carpet?

Act fast — the sooner you treat a stain the better. Blot up as much of the spill as possible before applying any cleaner. For food and beverage stains, mix one teaspoon of washing-up liquid with one cup of warm water and apply with a clean cloth, working from the outer edge of the stain inward. For oil-based stains, sprinkle baking soda first, leave for 15 minutes to absorb the grease, then vacuum before using a mild detergent solution. Avoid bleach on coloured carpets.

How do I prevent my carpet from slipping or bunching up?

Many Silva rugs feature non-slip backing options. but on very smooth surfaces such as polished tile or hardwood, an additional non-slip rug pad is recommended. Rug pads also protect your flooring and extend the life of the rug. For stair carpets, ensure the self-adhesive strip is pressed firmly along the entire width before use and check fixings every few months.

How can I keep my carpet looking new for longer?

Rotate your rug every six to twelve months so wear and sun exposure distribute evenly — especially near windows and in high-traffic hallways. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which fades colours. Use a door mat at every entrance to reduce dirt tracked onto indoor rugs. For plush or shaggy rugs, use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum rather than the beater bar to protect fibres.
